Sports Centre celebrates 25 years and welcomes new athletes into the Hall of Champions
On 21 November this year the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre celebrated its 25th anniversary with a gala black tie dinner. Established in 1984 as the State Sports Centre, the site has been a great supporter of international, national and state sporting events, an excellent facility for training and a great venue for concerts and other commercial activities. More recently home to the NSW Swifts and the West Sydney Razorbacks, it was the original sporting venue in the Sydney Olympic Park precinct, and is justly proud of this heritage.
The highlight of the evening was the induction of five new sportspeople into the NSW Hall of Champions, the sporting hall of fame housed at the Centre. The five new inductees are:
- Glenn McGrath AM Cricket
- Liz Ellis AM Netball
- Dennis Carroll Australian Rules Football
- David Hall OAM Wheelchair Sports – Tennis
- Ingo Renner OAM Gliding
Louise Sauvage OAM (Wheelchair Sports – Athletics) and Ken Rosewall MBE (Tennis) was also honoured by induction into the recently formed Hall of Legends.
This prestigious occasion was attended by many great sportsmen and women, VIPs and other dignitaries who gathered to honour the remarkable achievements of our athletes, and commemorate the Sports Centre’s contribution to the sporting and cultural life of Sydney.
